Planning a trip to Cambodia? Knowing what to bring can make your journey much smoother. As someone who has spent a lot of time traveling in Southeast Asia, I’ve refined my packing list to include all the must-have essentials while avoiding unnecessary items. From lightweight clothing suitable for Cambodia’s tropical climate to important travel documents, this guide covers everything you’ll need for your adventure.

Travel Documents & Money

• Passport & Visa Copies – Always have a copy in case your passport gets lost or stolen. You should apply for your visa well in advance and print off copies.
• Cambodian Riel & US Dollars – Cash is widely used, with USD accepted almost everywhere. It is better to pay with USD generally although you may receive small change back in riel. It was difficult to get riel before arriving so bring USD cash with you.
• Debit & Credit Cards – Larger hotels and restaurants accept cards, but ATMs charge fees for withdrawals.
• Travel Insurance Details – Essential for medical emergencies—always carry a copy of your policy. I recommend Safety Wing.
• International Driver’s License – If you plan to rent a scooter/ motorbike, this may be required.
• Personal Medication – Bring any prescription meds you need along with a doctor’s note if necessary.

Backpack vs. Suitcase for Cambodia

While a suitcase may seem convenient, a backpack is often more practical in Cambodia. Streets can be uneven or unpaved, making rolling luggage difficult. If you’re taking buses, tuk-tuks, or boats, a backpack is much easier to manage as long as it is easy for you to carry.

I personally recommend a 40L waterproof backpack—perfect for Cambodia’s sudden tropical downpours and boat trips.

Footwear for Cambodia

• Flip-Flops – Ideal for the beach and casual wear.
• Comfortable Walking Shoes – Sneakers or lightweight trainers are great for city walks and temple visits.
• Sandals – Useful for slightly dressier occasions.
• Water Shoes – If you plan on exploring waterfalls or boat trips, these can be helpful.

Clothing for Women

• Loose Trousers or Elephant Pants – Comfortable and lightweight for exploring.
• Dresses & Maxi Skirts – Perfect for keeping cool while staying modest for temples.
• Denim Shorts & Playsuits – Great for casual sightseeing and warm evenings.
• Swimwear – Cambodia has some lovely islands, so pack a good bikini or swimsuit if heading to the beach
• Leggings & Light Sweater – Useful for air-conditioned buses or cool evenings.
• Sarong or Cover-Up – Multi-purpose for temples, the beach, or a light blanket.

Clothing for Men

• Breathable T-Shirts & Tank Tops – Light cotton or linen works best in the heat.
• Lightweight Button-Up Shirts – Ideal for evenings or smarter occasions.
• Shorts & Chinos – Casual options for the day and more polished looks for nights out.
• Swim Shorts – Essential for beach days and island hopping.
• Hoodie or Light Jacket – Useful for cooler airconditioned transport or in mountain areas Cambodia.

Things to Pack for Cambodia

• Sunglasses & Hat – The Cambodian sun is strong, so protect your eyes and face.
• Dry Bag – Keeps valuables safe from rain and boat splashes.
• Microfiber Towel – Dries quickly and takes up little space.
• Packing Cubes – Helps keep everything organized.
• Reusable Water Bottle – Reduce plastic waste and refill at hotels and cafes.
• Daypack – Perfect for carrying essentials during day trips.
• Earplugs – Helpful for noisy cities or bus journeys. These are the best reusable earplugs I use every night!

Toiletries for Cambodia

• Reef-Safe Sunscreen – Protect your skin while being eco-friendly.
• Insect Repellent – Opt for a natural alternative like citronella to avoid harming the environment.
• Tissues & Hand Sanitizer – Many bathrooms don’t provide toilet paper, so carry your own.
• Basic First Aid Kit – Pack antiseptic cream, painkillers, and diarrhea medication.
• Deodorant & Toothpaste – Available locally, but you may prefer your own brand.
• Hairbrush & Hair Ties – Humidity can make hair unmanageable!

What to pack for Cambodia trip: Electronics & Miscellaneous

• Universal Travel Adapter – Cambodia uses European-style two-pin plugs and you can buy a multi universal travel adapter here.
• Chargers & Power Bank – Essential for long travel days.
• Headphones – Great for long bus rides or flights.
• Camera & Phone – Don’t forget memory cards or cloud storage backups.

• Buy Some Items Locally – Many things, like toiletries and clothing, are available in markets and shops.
• Check the Weather – Monsoon season can impact your travel plans, so pack accordingly.
