The cost of living in Thailand is one of the most confusing parts of planning a move because everyone gives a different answer. One person says Thailand is cheap. Another says prices have gone up. Both can be true — depending on where you live, how you spend, and what kind of life you expect.
I’ve been an expat living in Thailand for 9 years now. I’ve seen the cost of rent increase over that time, even this year my own rent increased! I’ve seen a lot of expats move here thinking they will live like a backpacker and then they run out of money and have to return home.
My partner Jason and I want to make sure when you move to Thailand, you have a clear plan and monthly budget to go with it. We had many surprises over the years of living here. When Jason first moved here from the US to be with me, he actually lost his job within the first 6 weeks. When I relocated to Thailand for the second time, I also ran out of money and had to borrow from a friend.
