Working out where to visit for a month itinerary in Thailand can be confusing because it’s a pretty large country and some areas are difficult to reach (looking at you Koh Lipe!). I’ve created 6 done-for-you 30 day routes, so you can stop second-guessing and start booking your trip.

After nearly 10 years of living here, I have visited every spot in these itineraries, most of them multiple times (especially the nature filled ones like Khao Yai and Krabi) and I share what is worth your time.

With four weeks to play with, you have the flexibility to slow down and go deeper, rather than rushing from one highlight to the next (something I have been guilty of before!). Thailand is perfect for slow travel because we have night trains and buses (for the adventurous). I have also added realistic travel timing, season tips, and a simple way to choose the best route for you.

If you have less time, check out my 1 week, 2 week, and 3 week Thailand itineraries.

Thailand 1 Month Itinerary Planning Checklist

Before you pick a route, make these decisions first.

Fly into Bangkok or Phuket

Bangkok is best if you want northern Thailand, culture, markets, and easy connections everywhere. Phuket is easiest if you want to start (and end) with islands and beaches.

North Thailand and South Thailand

If this is your first trip, I recommend combining both unless the weather is working against you. Although to be honest, after years of living in the tropics – I love a storm! Monsoon rains are like something you’ve never seen before!

Activities you enjoy

Be honest about your travel style. If you hate long transfers, pick a route with fewer moves and longer stays.

Weather and time of year in Thailand

Thailand seasons vary by region. Use the season section below to avoid rough sea crossings and weeks of rain. Although I still travel in rainy season and wouldn’t let it deter me. Diving in the rain can be quite beautiful!

Thailand Travel Time Rules for a 1 Month Route

These simple rules make your itinerary feel smooth instead of exhausting. We’ve probably all been there – trying to pack too much in and not allowing for journey time, waiting for ferry time and just a general lot of faffing around. This does go hand in hand with travel in Thailand! You learn a lot of patience when you’ve travelled here for a while.

Rule 1: Add a buffer day every 7 to 10 days

Thailand travel can be slow. Boats get delayed (not as often as the Philippines but there can be some waiting around). I’ve never known a night train to arrive at the exact time it says – and I do recommend these for the more adventurous. My brother in law was not happy when I made him get one as they are noisy and bouncy (but I think fun, he did not!).

Rule 2: Count transfer days as travel days

If you move islands or go from north to south, expect to lose most of a day even when it looks short on a map. Getting to the airport, waiting for transport, delayed flights (especially Air Asia and Vietjet lately – no idea why and it’s a bit annoying!). Although I do still take them because they are the cheapest airlines but don’t take them really close to a long haul international flight. That would be too stressful.

Rule 3: Use flights strategically

For a one month Thailand itinerary, one or two domestic flights can be worth it if they save you 10 to 14 hours of travel. Domestic flights can often be super affordable in Thailand. I just booked a Bangkok to Phuket one way flight for 1000 baht!

I’ve often underestimated timings like travelling to Koh Lipe (my fav island) basically takes a whole day and I have to remember to build that in.

Best Time of Year for a Thailand 1 Month Itinerary

This is the simple version that helps most travelers plan better.

Andaman Sea (Krabi, Phuket, Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe)

Best months are roughly November to April. Seas can be rough and rainier roughly May to October. My personal favourite months are November and February to travel in as it’s not as hot as April (which is a scorcher!) and it tends to not be as busy – unless Lunar New Year is over that time period.

Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao)

Often better during parts of the Andaman rainy season. The Gulf can have heavier rain later in the year, often around October to December. I recently went to Koh Tao in August and we had some choppy waves which affected our dive boat going out so do bear in mind the seasons are a bit messed up lately.

North Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai)

Cooler season is roughly November to February. Hot season can be intense March to May. Burning season can affect air quality around late February to April.

To be honest, there is no month that I would avoid Thailand, I travel in both dry and rainy seasons and really don’t let it affect me that much! I just tramp through the jungle in the rain still (and yes I did a very rainy night safari in Khao Sok once – soaked through!).

The Best of Thailand 1 Month Itinerary (Best Overall Route)

This is the most balanced one month Thailand itinerary. It includes Bangkok, northern Thailand, jungle, and southern islands.

Who this Thailand itinerary is for

First timers who want a bit of everything and want a route that feels classic Thailand.

Recommended pace

Medium pace with a good mix of exploration and downtime.

30 Day Thailand Itinerary Route Overview

Days 1 to 5: Bangkok
Days 6 to 12: Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai
Days 13 to 18: Krabi base (Ao Nang or Railay)
Days 19 to 22: Khao Sok National Park
Days 23 to 28: Koh Lanta or Koh Lipe
Days 29 to 30: Travel back to Bangkok

Days 1 to 5 in Bangkok

Focus on a mix of city center and old Bangkok. Include one day trip if you want a break from the heat.
Options: Rattanakosin temples, Thonburi canals, Ayutthaya day trip, Kanchanaburi day trip. I’ve got tons of great day trips here.

I’ve got full posts on what to do in Bangkok and the places I always take my loved ones when they visit. What I don’t have is hotel recommendations because I’ve always lived here and family and friends tend to stay with me!

Travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai

Fastest: flight
Cheapest and classic: night train

Days 6 to 12 in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai

Ideas: ethical elephant sanctuary, night markets, temple hopping, street food, day trip nature spots, White Temple in Chiang Rai, local coffee areas

The White Temple in Chiang Rai is truly worth the hype – so unusual and inside is pretty weird! I also love the ‘Grand Canyon’ as a day visit to swim in the turquoise waters of this converted quarry. Went there with my sister and we both really enjoyed it.

Travel from Chiang Mai to Krabi

Fastest: flight to Krabi

Days 13 to 18 in Krabi (Ao Nang or Railay base)

Do day trips and mix in rest days.
Ideas: Railay beach, rock climbing, kayaking, Hong Island, Phi Phi day trip, national park hike, lagoon viewpoints

I’m pretty obsessed with Krabi and spend a lot of holidays and long weekends there because there is just so much to do: scuba diving, hiking, national parks, kayaking, beaches, temples, emerald lagoon…the list goes on! My best tips are all here as well as where to stay with my hotel recs.

Travel from Krabi to Khao Sok

Minivan is easiest. Expect several hours.

Days 19 to 22 in Khao Sok National Park

Stay on Cheow Lan Lake in a floating bungalow and add one jungle experience.
Ideas: lake sunrise, caves, guided wildlife walk, kayaking, viewpoint

I’ve been here multiple times and it’s always magical. Hornbills flew over head while I was swimming last time and I’ve seen gibbons every morning when joining the morning safari. My dream is to see wild elephants here though…maybe next time! Khao Sok is a great place to visit for nature lovers.

Travel from Khao Sok to Koh Lanta or Koh Lipe

This is a long travel day with van and boat combinations depending on the island.

Days 23 to 28 on Koh Lanta or Koh Lipe

Koh Lanta is slower and great for chilling. Koh Lipe has some of the healthiest reefs I have seen in Thailand.
Ideas: beach days, snorkel trips, scuba diving, sunset spots, slow cafe days

I visited Koh Lanta with my parents and just loved the slow vibe of this island. It’s hard to choose between them but if you want amazing snorkelling then I’d choose Koh Lipe every time as it has the best coral reefs in Thailand!

Days 29 to 30 travel back to Bangkok

Plan this as a transfer and recovery block.

Best Thailand Itinerary for Island Lovers (Andaman and Gulf Route)

This Thailand 1 month itinerary focuses on the South and hits both coasts.

Who this Thailand itinerary is for

People who want beaches, swimming, viewpoints, and island hopping to be the main focus.

30 Day Thailand Itinerary Route Overview

Days 1 to 4: Bangkok
Days 5 to 10: Koh Phangan
Days 11 to 15: Koh Tao
Days 16 to 20: Krabi base (Ao Nang or Railay)
Days 21 to 23: Koh Lanta
Days 24 to 30: Koh Lipe

Days 1 to 4 in Bangkok

Keep it light and focus on food, a couple temples, and one big neighborhood day.

You may want to skip straight down to the islands but I do always recommend visitors experience Bangkok – what a city!

Days 5 to 10 Koh Phangan

Mix Full Moon Party if you want it with quiet beaches, viewpoints, yoga, and waterfall days.

This is up there with my favourite island. In my 20s I went to 5 Full Moon parties and loved them all. I haven’t been since hitting 30 but no judgement if beach parties are your thing at any age! (Just know it will be full of youngsters!)

Koh Phangan has so much to offer: scuba diving, waterfalls, yoga retreats, views for days.

Days 11 to 15 Koh Tao

Perfect for scuba diving. Great for paddleboarding, viewpoints, and relaxed beach days.
Suggestion: do a 4 day open water course if you are new to diving.

Great for divers although it can get busy in December/January time. Chance of whale sharks and great place for turtle snorkelling!

Days 16 to 20 Krabi base

Same logic as above. Find out where to stay and what to do here.

Days 21 to 23 Koh Lanta

Slow down here.

Chill out on one of the widest beaches in Thailand – I have it here under best quiet beaches!

Days 24 to 30 Koh Lipe

Snorkel, dive, and do an Adang Island hike.

Full Koh Lipe guide here.

Best Thailand Route for Wildlife Lovers and Scuba Divers (Best Nature Route)

Thailand has incredible wildlife, from wild elephants to whale sharks, plus gibbons, hornbills, pink dolphins, and even whales. Probably my favourite route as I am a full on nature lover.

Who this Thailand itinerary is for

People who want ethical wildlife, jungles, and scuba diving as the main purpose of the trip.

30 Day Thailand Itinerary Route Overview

Days 1 to 3: Bangkok
Day 4: Whale watching day trip from Bangkok
Days 5 to 8: Khao Yai National Park
Days 9 to 11: Hua Hin elephant lodge area
Days 12 to 16: Koh Phangan or Koh Samui, plus Koh Tao option
Days 17 to 20: Khao Sok National Park
Days 21 to 24: Ao Nang and Railay
Days 25 to 30: Koh Lipe

Days 1 to 3 Bangkok plus whale watching

Add one wildlife-focused day trip. So many locals and visitors have no idea you can whale watch in Thailand. I’ve seen the Eden whales every time I’ve been on this trip and never been disappointed. They are pretty much resident in the Gulf of Thailand year round – the organisation even give you a second free trip if you don’t spot any that’s how sure they are. Contact the company I went with to see about the best time of year for the rare Irawaddy dolphins. I saw them 2 years ago and it felt so special as they are highly endangered.

Whale Watching in Thailand

Days 5 to 8 Khao Yai National Park

This is one of the best places for a chance to see wild elephants. Hire a guide for better sightings and safety.

I’ve been so many times this national park is my favourite and I’ve been lucky enough to see wild elephants here multiple times!

Days 9 to 11 Hua Hin ethical elephant lodge

Stay near Hua Hin for an ethical elephant experience. This is the best rescue centre in Thailand for the work that they do…and one of the few places you can swim, drink a cocktail and see rescued elephants all at the same time. I love their rooms above the lodge.

Note: I will only ever recommend ethical places to see wildlife as this is an important value to me.

Days 12 to 16 Koh Phangan or Koh Samui with Koh Tao option

Look for [ink dolphin trips, and decide if you want to add diving on Koh Tao depending on conditions.

Koh Tao is popular with snorkellers too and I saw more turtles snorkelling than diving last time with my sister.

Days 17 to 20 Khao Sok National Park

Treehouse plus floating bungalow lake stay works great here. Allow at least 2 hours to get to Krabi from here.

Days 21 to 24 Ao Nang and Railay

Add the monkey trail and a calm day.

Days 25 to 30 Koh Lipe

Prioritize snorkeling and diving. Allow a full day of travel (at least 5-6 hours to get to Lipe from Krabi).

I’ve got tons of posts about Koh Lipe here from my full guide, to accommodation comparisons to a luxury hotel I love.

Top Thailand Itinerary for Party Lovers (Best Nightlife Route)

Thailand nightlife is famous, but you will have a better month if you mix party destinations with recovery time.

Who this Thailand itinerary is for

Nightlife-focused travelers who still want islands and variety.

30 Day Thailand Itinerary Route Overview

Days 1 to 5: Bangkok nightlife
Days 6 to 11: Koh Phangan Full Moon Party
Days 12 to 14: Krabi recovery base
Days 15 to 19: Koh Phi Phi
Days 20 to 25: Phuket Patong
Optional Days 26 to 30: Chiang Mai and Pai

Days 1 to 5 Bangkok nightlife

Focus: Khao San and Sukhumvit for nightlife, plus food spots during the day.

Khao San is big for party-goers. I enjoyed this a lot in my party stage although I don’t go often now and I’m concerned about running into students who I teach!

Days 6 to 11 Koh Phangan

Full Moon Party or Half Moon or jungle parties.

Use your safe in your hotel room. Robberies are rare in Thailand (I’ve only had a phone stolen once when I was drunk – and it was a cheap one!). But at Full Moon, thieves know that all the guests are out so it does become prime time. More Full Moon party tips here.

Days 12 to 14 Krabi recovery base

Slow beach time and one gentle activity.

Days 15 to 19 Koh Phi Phi

Fireshows and island hopping plus party nights.

Diving and snorkel trips on Koh Phi Phi are great to see baby black tip reef sharks and chance of turtles. Scuba diving once my sister and I saw a leopard shark which was just incredible!

Days 20 to 25 Phuket

Phuket has way more than parties. Boat trips, Big Buddhas, green areas and lovely beaches. It does tend to get crowded because the airport is international.

Optional Days 26 to 30 Chiang Mai and Pai

If you want mountain nightlife and a change of pace, add Pai.

Top Thailand Route for History and Culture (Best Temples Route)

Thailand has deep history, ancient capitals, and major World War II sites. This route is for travelers who want more than beaches.

Who this Thailand itinerary is for

People who love temples, museums, ruins, and historical context.

30 Day Thailand Itinerary Route Overview

Days 1 to 5: Bangkok
Days 6 to 7: Ayutthaya
Days 8 to 13: Kanchanaburi
Days 14 to 17: Sukhothai
Days 18 to 24: Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai
Days 25 to 29: Khao Yai National Park
Day 30: Bangkok

Days 1 to 5 Bangkok for culture

Add major temples, museums, and neighborhoods that show old Bangkok.

All my favourite things to do are here including Jim Thompson’s House.

Days 6 to 7 Ayutthaya

Rent a bicycle and explore ruins early morning to avoid heat.

Love this as a day trip or short overnight. The temples are gorgeous but it does get hot cycling around them so rest and relax with a coconut in a cafe!

Days 8 to 13 Kanchanaburi

Explore Hellfire Pass, the Death Railway, museums, and Erawan national park.

I love this trip and have been multiple times. We actually run a school trip to the historical places here so I’ve taken teenage students as well as been alone here. The Erawan waterfall is the most famous in Thailand for it’s gorgeous turquoise waters. You can swim at some levels of the falls.

Thailand beautiful waterfall destination
Swimming in magical blue pools in the Erawan National Park

Days 14 to 17 Sukhothai

Ancient temples and historical parks.

I haven’t personally visited Sukhothai yet, but it’s a top-rated stop for history lovers and fits well between Kanchanaburi and Chiang Mai. You would need to get the train from Bangkok to Sukhothai as it’s in the middle of the country. If you’d rather stick to places I’ve personally been, swap these 3 nights for an extra 3 nights in Chiang Mai or add another Bangkok day trip.

Days 18 to 24 Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai

Temples, markets, and day trips.

Days 25 to 29 Khao Yai National Park

Back to Bangkok and choose a weekend trip from my list to finish off your Thailand itinerary.

Best Thailand Route for Backpacking (Budget 1 Month Route)

Any of the above routes can be adapted for backpacking, but this section focuses on saving money and reducing flights.

Who this Thailand itinerary is for

Backpackers and budget travelers who want to keep costs down.

How to backpack Thailand for 1 month

Use night trains and night buses where it makes sense. You save on a night of accommodation and you often arrive early.

Night trains are fun but you don’t always get a lot of sleep as they are noisy and bouncy (and annoyingly keep the light on sometimes). Night buses are better for sleeping and tend to be more on time but you can lay flat on a bed on a night train compared with a night bus.

Backpacking Thailand route tips

Choose fewer bases and do day trips
Travel overnight when possible
Book popular islands a little ahead in peak season
Avoid changing islands every 2 days

Thailand 1 Month Itinerary FAQs

Is 1 month in Thailand too long?

No, it is one of the best lengths for Thailand because travel days add up. With a month, you can slow down and still see multiple regions.

Slow travel here is amazing, it’s so well set up with night buses and trains and minivans linking much of the country (and they can take a while).

How much money do you need for 1 month in Thailand?

It depends on your travel style and how many flights you take. Budget travelers can spend far less than comfort travelers. Key cost drivers are accommodation, domestic flights, and tours.

If you want to keep costs down think local. Local food, drinks, slow trains, minivans.

Should you start in Bangkok or end in Bangkok?

Most people start in Bangkok because flights are frequent and connections are easy. Ending in Bangkok can also work well because it gives you a shopping and food finale before you fly out.

Do you need domestic flights for a Thailand 1 month itinerary?

Not always, but one or two flights can save you huge travel time and protect your energy for experiences. I do fly more now than before because I want to fit more into my holidays now that I live here.

What is the best month to travel to Thailand for 30 days?

Many people love the cooler months, but the best month for you depends on where you are going. Use the Andaman and Gulf season notes above to pick the best island route. Again, February and November are my favourites!

Final Tips for Your Thailand 1 Month Itinerary

If you are unsure which route to pick, choose the balanced Best of Thailand itinerary. It covers the core experiences most travelers want in one trip. Then adjust one section based on what you love most, beaches, jungle, culture, or nightlife. The nature ones are always my preferred things to see and do on holidays in Thailand.
